Q: Is it safe to drive in Montana in the winter?
A: Yes, regardless of weather conditions, Montana’s roads are some of the best kept in the nation. High elevation highway passes can at times be closed or require chains. We encourage you to check road conditions prior to travel, and see for yourself the magic of Yellowstone Country. For statewide road conditions call 1.800.226.7623 or www.mdt.state.mt.us

Q: How much time should I spend in Yellowstone National Park?
A: Of course our answer is “Spend as much time as you want!” Honestly, this question depends on the kind of experience you are hoping for. Allow extra time for a good look at all the park has to offer, including wildlife viewing, hiking, biking, fishing, photography and camping. Many historical sites, shopping areas, and other great Montana attractions are within easy driving distance of the park. The gateway communities of Cooke City, Gardiner and West Yellowstone are adjacent to the park and offer many amenities also.

Q: What else can I enjoy during winter in addition to skiing?
A: Besides three world-class ski areas, and over 184 kilometers of cross-country skiing, we have winter carnivals, ski joring championships, snowshoeing, sleigh rides, dogsledding, snowmobiling and wildlife viewing for openers. Check out our Winter Recreation page for more information.

Q: What time does Old Faithful erupt?
A: Old Faithful erupts on the average of every 70 minutes, with only Mother Nature knowing the exact time. Predictions are based on the length and strength of the preceding eruption and can be obtained at Park visitor centers.

Q: When does the Beartooth Highway open?
A: The spectacular route between Red Lodge and Cooke City was described by the late Charles Kuralt as “..the most beautiful road in America.” It is open seasonally from mid to late May until early October, but is weather dependent. Call the Red Lodge Chamber of Commerce for information at 406-446-1718.

Q: Can I reserve campground sites in Yellowstone National Park?
A: Campsites can be reserved in the park with certain limitations. For information about reserving campground sites in the Park call 1.307.344.7311. But don’t forget that there are lots of campgrounds outside the park too!
