Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the nearest airport?      A: The largest commercial airport within Yellowstone Country is located in Bozeman. It is serviced by Delta, Sky West, Horizon, and Northwest Airlines. West Yellowstone's airport is open from June through September and is serviced by Sky West. Nearby Billings also has a large airport.

When does Yellowstone Park close?  A: While the northern gate to Yellowstone Park remains open to automobile traffic all year long, many of its most popular features, like Old Faithful and the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone can only be reached on snowmobile, snowcoach, or cross country skis through the winter months.  Yellowstone closes in early November to auto traffic, and reopens to over-snow traffic in mid-December.  Spring closure of snow trails occurs in early to mid-march, and roads are generally open to cars by mid-April, weather permitting.  Call Yellowstone National Park for up to the minute details: 307-344-7381

What time does Old Faithful go off? A:  Old Faithful erupts every sixty-five to 95 minutes. Information on predicted eruptions of Old Faithful and other geysers can be obtained at Park visitor centers.

How can I make lodging arrangements in Yellowstone? A:  All lodging within Yellowstone is handled by the central lodging number: 307-344-7311

How can I make reservations in Prairie Dog Town? A: You can't. It's a very exclusive place, and unless you happen to be a prairie dog, you won't find a room. (If you ARE a prairie dog, and are reading this, you should consider running for Prairie Dog Town Council. Those varmints might even elect you mayor!!)

Is the Beartooth Highway open?  The spectacular route between Red Lodge and Cooke City was described by the late Charles Kuralt as "..the most beautiful road in America."  It is open seasonally from mid to late May until late September.
